Using pictures as a base for my own drawings... It's just not as good as creating an image from the top of my head and expressing it on paper... It's just NOT the same
I want to draw my own characters, not those that already exists and me simply recreating them. But the only problem is... Given a blank sheet of paper, I just find it so very hard to draw something without the need of a guide...
I'm so mad at myself... (If that's a suitable word to describe how I feel) If only a brilliant artist would be willing to teach me the basics of drawing manga/cartoons to help me, I wouldn't ask for anything else in the world!

Hmm... Somehow it made so much more sense listening to your explanation in person with more detail than reading your advice here...
In any case, this has helped me a lot...

Anyway, what I wanted to say to you (since I've recently said something similar to my sister concerning fanfiction) is this:
Drawing fanart is not necessarily a bad thing, as it's such great practice. And again, a point I'd like to make is that by practicing with characters (or whatever else it is) that already exist, you can make sure that you are consistent before moving onto your own stuff. What I was saying to my sister was that in terms of Fanfiction, I think it's important to be able to keep a character that already exists true to the nature that their creator gave them before I create my own - this way it will be easier to keep an OC in character and not suddenly warp their personality just because I have toe power to do so, and I think that something similar can be said for drawing as well...
(I hope that made sense =s)
After playing about with characters that already exist, it becomes easier to come up with original (and sometimes better developed) pieces/characters/whatever of our own.
So don't be mad at yourself and persevere!
